Preserved in a Velvet Lined Box(2024)

This work uses family history to create whimsical imagery that mimics performative storytelling like: pop up books, theater sets, and shadow plays. Inspired by “ukiyo-e” paintings, paper cut-outs are layered to make multi-planar scenes. My intention is to create dynamic and mysterious images that call viewers to peer into the scene and contemplate what is unfolding within the boxes.

These boxes serve not only a form of fantastical storytelling but also as a means to continue sharing and cherishing my family’s culture. These paintings are made from the memories of my grandparents and mother. These memories are like folklore to me, passed down at the dinner table, like ghost stories around a campfire.

Traditional Korean artistry is used as a motif in my work to help set the scene. Floral borders around my paintings are based on Korean lacquer jewelry boxes. The jewelry boxes are covered in patterns created from mother of pearl, a style called “najeon chilgi”. They are at once a picture frame to adorn the image and an open jewelry box that the audience has a chance to look inside.
